Golden Age Transportation
Transportation illustration in the early twentieth century reflected rapidly changing modes of travel.
In the early 1900s both the automobile and airplane sparked public interest. As motorcars began proliferating in the Model T Ford era, car advertising in magazines created new opportunities for artists.
Aviation in the 1920s became an adventurous way to travel and magazine illustration kept pace with technological advances in aircraft design.
Today, while vintage cars and aircraft are found mainly in private collections and museums, vintage transportation art remains popular.
The first part of this Gallery mainly features early automobiles and airplanes. Later additions will include railroad locomotives, trains, bicycles, and horse-drawn carriages.
